The Hive Lab

The Hive Lab is an ongoing project that take on the ideas of Social Sculpture introduced by German artist Joseph Beuys. It is a Lab trying to promote DIY culture to the general public, in order to reshape the culture landscape in Shanghai.

Personally, as a product designer, I always believe that we should take initiative to becoming a culture generator. Currently, I started a fab-lab with a friend that aiming to promoting DIY culture in Shanghai, call “The Hive Lab”.

I am working as the creative director to promote responsible production and consumption through Do It Yourself (DIY). I was really trying to address how can we buy less but create more in this consumerist world. In our Lab, we host classes to teach public on how make product with Ready-Made and using the Lab to deconstruct everyday object and rebuild it for repurposing. By doing so, participants learn how to use their hand to build and create.

I also make videos to give examples for online audience of how to transform something from what you already had. All of these is aiming to open up people’s imagination to believe that they can also put their creation into the reality.
